Welcome to the fourth episode of The Vinyl Experience.

I’m very happy to be playing some different music this week. I wanted a jazz/experimental episode from the start, but needed to get my hands on some very talented musicians… and I found them…

in spades.

Pat Simard

Pat Simard

Pat Simard is just an absolute wonder. He’s a drummer, vibist and composer who is on his way to the Berklee College of Music in the fall, to walk the same halls as once did Quincy Jones, John Mayer, Diana Krall, to name a few alumni.

His music is great to listen to in damn near any setting. He’s got fantastic rhythm and style, and his work on the vibraphone is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

Kate Wakefield

Kate Wakefield

Next is Kate Wakefield, a woman who blends cello, opera and experimental music in a brave way that could be too much to handle, were it not for the fact that she is so incredible that she appears to pull it off with ease… and you sit mesmerized, listening to her music again and again, the hair on the back of your neck rising periodically during “To Emily Dickinson“.

I can honestly say, I’ve never heard anyone with this style before… and I cannot wait to hear more from Kate.

Mosayk

Mosayk

I’m very happy to be playing not just two, but four songs from Mo Sayk, an Ottawa jazz band that is smoother than twenty year old scotch.

Combine powerful vocals, smooth guitar and wicked sax solos and you have Mo Sayk.

The band’s recently gotten a couple new members to fill in their sound, and they’ll be playing at the Mercury Lounge on the 15th of August. With any luck, I’ll be there with a drink in my hand and a smile on my face.

Haley Bop

Haley Bop

And lastly, a small taste of Haley Bop, who will be featured more on next week’s episode.

I adore Haley’s voice, and this song had just enough jazz in it to fit perfectly into this episode and tie us into next week’s.
